Blog Post Prompts

Blog Post 1

Answer the following questions. Each should take about one paragraph to answer thoroughly and sufficiently.

  1. What do you think you did best as a writer in high school? Conversely, based on your experiences in high school, what aspect of your writing do you feel needs the most work?
  2. Reflect on what you know about college writing. How do you expect college writing to differ from high school writing? What do you see as key characteristics of successful college writing? Given that (most likely) you’ve never actually experienced a college writing course, where do these ideas come from? Trace your assumptions about college writing back down to their source(s).
  3. Take a close look at the “Learning Outcomes” section on the syllabus. Which of these learning outcomes do you feel most prepared for, and why? Which do you feel least prepared for, and why?

Due: This should be posted (as a blog post) on your individual WordPress site by Tuesday, 9/13 by the beginning of class.

Blog Post 2

Find three potential ads for your Project 1. Look for ads that seem to have originated from an interesting rhetorical situation, and/or in which there’s a lot of pathos, ethos, and/or logos being used. Post a link (e.g. from YouTube) to each ad as a blog post. That’s all you need to do! No other writing needed.

Due: should be published to your blog by the beginning of class on 9/22

Blog Post 3

Email me (imkenned@umich.edu) your chosen text or documentary for Project 2. For 1 percentage point extra credit (i.e. toward your overall final grade for the class) write a rough version of your introductory paragraph for Project 2, and post this as a blog post on your WordPress.

Due: both the email and the intro paragraph (if you choose to do it) are due by the beginning of class on 10/27.

Blog Post 4

Write a blog post in which you compose two to three sentences in which you lay out your topic idea for Project 3. Then, in the same blog post, following the advice and examples given in A Little Argument on pages 66-68, construct an outline for your paper. Don’t worry if the outline isn’t perfect or even totally complete yet. It’s fine if it has holes or gaps in it. We’ll work on it in class.

Due: Thursday, 11/17, by the beginning of class
